Building a High-Impact Board-Superintendent Partnership

“Building a High-Impact Board-Superintendent Partnership” provides detailed, thoroughly tested guidance that school board members, superintendents, and senior administrators can put to immediate use in their districts in building the kind of high-impact board leadership – and really solid board-superintendent partnership – that these rapidly changing, challenging times demand.  This program draws on presenter Doug Eadie’s 25 years of hands-on experience in helping school districts and other public and nonprofit organizations strengthen their governance, and on his 17 books, including three that focus on K-12 leadership:  The Board-Savvy Superintendent (with AASA’s CEO, Paul Houston); Eight Keys To an Extraordinary Board-Superintendent Partnership; and Five Habits of High-Impact School Boards.

“Building a High-Impact Board-Superintendent Partnership” consists of 6 program modules:

  1. Board Governing Role and Work:  a fresh view of governing as a dynamic decision-making process; practical ways to map out processes for involving the board in key governing areas - planning; performance oversight and monitoring; external relations

  1. Board Standing Committees:  how well-designed board standing committees can contribute to high-impact governing as powerful “governing engines;” a model committee structure that corresponds to the board’s streams of governing decisions and judgments

  1. Board self-management:  practical ways to develop board member governing knowledge and skills and to manage board governing performance

  1. Leading Strategic Change:  description of a powerful new tool that is much more effective than traditional strategic planning in managing innovation and change:  the Strategic Change Portfolio; the steps involved in fashioning and implementing the Strategic Change Initiatives in the Strategic Change Portfolio

  1. The Board-Superintendent Working Relationship:  the superintendent attitudes, knowledge, skills and techniques that are required to build a solid, lasting board-superintendent partnership; practical ways – most importantly board evaluation of superintendent performance – to keep the board-superintendent working relationship productive and healthy

  1. The Governance Task Force as a Board Development Vehicle:  practical guidance in organizing a governance task force consisting of board members and the superintendent and employing the task force to update the board’s governing role, function, and structure

Program Benefits

  • Your school district will ultimately be educationally and financially stronger because your board and superintendent, functioning as a “Strategic Governing Team,” will effectively address the strategic issues facing your district.
  • Your board members will take greater satisfaction in – and feel stronger ownership of – their governing decisions.
  • The partnership between your board and superintendent will be rock-solid – able to withstand the inevitable stresses and strains involved in leading a modern school district in these challenging times.
  • Your district’s image and community relations will benefit from more effective board leadership.

Problems the Program will Solve

  • Strategic issues that go unidentified or unaddressed
  • A lack of systematic, creative, proactive board involvement in the governing process
  • Inadequate board understanding – and ownership – of its governing role and functions
  • An under-managed board-superintendent partnership that is not likely to survive considerable stress over a long period of time
